Ingredients
For the Burger Meat
1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon butter or oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 slices American cheese or cheddar cheese
For the Bowl
4 cups chopped romaine lettuce
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup diced pickles
1/2 cup diced red onion
1 cup cooked fries, roasted potatoes, or tater tots
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Sesame seeds, optional
For the Burger Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon pickle juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until the sauce is creamy, smooth, and well blended. Set it aside while you prepare the rest of the bowl so the flavors can come together.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the butter or oil. Add the ground beef in small portions, then press it down firmly with a spatula to create crispy smash-style pieces.
Season the beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Let the beef brown before breaking it apart so it develops those delicious crispy edges. Cook for about 6–8 minutes, or until fully browned and cooked through.
Place the cheese slices over the hot beef and let them melt. Once the cheese is soft and creamy, gently mix it into the beef so every bite has that rich, cheesy burger flavor.
Divide the chopped romaine lettuce between serving bowls. Top each bowl with cherry tomatoes, diced pickles, red onion, cooked fries or roasted potatoes, and shredded cheddar cheese.
Spoon the hot cheesy burger meat over the prepared bowl ingredients. Drizzle generously with the burger sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately while the beef is warm and the toppings are fresh.
Notes
- For the best smash burger texture, make sure the skillet is hot before adding the beef. High heat helps create browned, crispy pieces instead of soft steamed meat.
- Do not stir the beef too much at the beginning. Let it sit for a minute or two after pressing it down so it can form flavorful crispy edges.
- Ground beef with a little fat, such as 80/20 or 85/15, works best for this recipe because it stays juicy and flavorful. Leaner beef can be used, but you may want to add a little extra oil or butter.
- The burger sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Chilling it for at least 15–20 minutes helps the flavors become even better.
- Add the hot beef right before
